    Detection of irrigation inhomogeneities in an olive grove using the NDRE vegetation index obtained from UAV images

    We have developed a simple photogrammetric method to identify heterogeneous areas of irrigated olive groves and vineyard crops using a commercial multispectral camera mounted on an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). By comparing NDVI, GNDVI, SAVI, and NDRE vegetation indices, we find that the latter shows irrigation irregularities in an olive grove not discernible with the other indices. This may render the NDRE as particularly useful to identify growth inhomogeneities in crops. Given the fact that few satellite detectors are sensible in the red-edge (RE) band and none with the spatial resolution offered by UAVs, this finding has the potential of turning UAVs into a local farmer’s favourite aid tool.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    EMPA-KIDNEY: expanding the range of kidney protection by SGLT2 inhibitors

It expanded the spectrum of CKD that may benefit from sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibition to participants with urinary albumin: creatinine ratio 20 mL/min/1.73 m2 or even lower (254 participants had an eGFR 15–20 mL/min/1.73 m2). EMPA-KIDNEY was stopped prematurely because of efficacy, thus limiting the ability to confirm benefit on the primary outcome in every pre-specified subgroup, especially in those with more slowly progressive CKD. However, data on chronic eGFR slopes were consistent with benefit at any eGFR or urinary albumin:creatinine ratio level potentially delaying kidney replacement therapy by 2–27 years, depending on baseline eGFR. The representation of diverse causes of CKD (>1600 participants with glomerular disease, >1400 with hypertensive kidney disease, >450 with tubulointerstitial disease and >600 with unknown cause) was higher than in prior SGLT2 inhibitor trials, although polycystic kidney disease was excluded. Around 15% (almost 1000) of participants were not on renin–angiotensin system blockade. The clinical characteristics of the cohort differed from DAPA-CKD (A Study to Evaluate the Effect of Dapagliflozin on Renal Outcomes and Cardiovascular Mortality in Patients With Chronic Kidney Disease), as did the frequency of individual components of the primary outcome in the placebo arm. Thus, rather than compare EMPA-KIDNEY with DAPA-CKD, the results of both trials should be seen as complementary to those of other SGLT2 inhibitor trials.     How should the sustainability of the location of dry ports be measured? A proposed methodology using Bayesian networks and multi-criteria decision analysis

    The global economic structure, with its decentralized production and the consequent increase in freight traffic all over the world, creates considerable problems and challenges for the freight transport sector. This situation has led shipping to become the most suitable and cheapest way to transport goods. Thus, ports are configured as nodes with critical importance in the logistics supply chain as a link between two transport systems, sea and land. Increase in activity at seaports is producing three undesirable effects: increasing road congestion, lack of open space in port installations and a significant environmental impact on seaports. These adverse effects can be mitigated by moving part of the activity inland. Implementation of dry ports is a possible solution and would also provide an opportunity to strengthen intermodal solutions as part of an integrated and more sustainable transport chain, acting as a link between road and railway networks. In this sense, implementation of dry ports allows the separation of the links of the transport chain, thus facilitating the shortest possible routes for the lowest capacity and most polluting means of transport. Thus, the decision of where to locate a dry port demands a thorough analysis of the whole logistics supply chain, with the objective of transferring the largest volume of goods possible from road to more energy efficient means of transport, like rail or short-sea shipping, that are less harmful to the environment. However, the decision of where to locate a dry port must also ensure the sustainability of the site. Thus, the main goal of this article is to research the variables influencing the sustainability of dry port location and how this sustainability can be evaluated. With this objective, in this paper we present a methodology for assessing the sustainability of locations by the use of Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) and Bayesian Networks (BNs). MCDA is used as a way to establish a scoring, whilst BNs were chosen to eliminate arbitrariness in setting the weightings using a technique that allows us to prioritize each variable according to the relationships established in the set of variables. In order to determine the relationships between all the variables involved in the decision, giving us the importance of each factor and variable, we built a K2 BN algorithm. To obtain the scores of each variable, we used a complete cartography analysed by ArcGIS. Recognising that setting the most appropriate location to place a dry port is a geographical multidisciplinary problem, with significant economic, social and environmental implications, we consider 41 variables (grouped into 17 factors) which respond to this need. As a case of study, the sustainability of all of the 10 existing dry ports in Spain has been evaluated. In this set of logistics platforms, we found that the most important variables for achieving sustainability are those related to environmental protection, so the sustainability of the locations requires a great respect for the natural environment and the urban environment in which they are framed

    Logistic groups in the Republic of Panama

    A map of the logistic groups in the Republic of Panama and complementary maps of the distribution of the population density, GDP density, the economic activity "transport, storage and communications", and the primary and secondary road network are presented. The clusters of territorial groups on each map were analyzed and created using the "decision tree" data mining method in order to determine territorial groups with similar characteristics, including logistics infrastructure and nodes, socioeconomics and the environmental situation. At the reference scale of 1:800,000 these maps represent a planning tool to decision makers in land use matters

    Long-Term Dynamic Humoral Response to SARS-CoV-2 mRNA Vaccines in Patients on Peritoneal Dialysis

Patients on peritoneal dialysis (PD) present an impaired humoral response against SARS-CoV-2, at least after the initial vaccination and booster dose. Until now, the effect of a fourth dose has not been established. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the long-term dynamics of the humoral response of PD patients to multiple doses of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines, focusing on the effect of the fourth dose. Methods. This is an analysis of the prospective and multicentric SENCOVAC study. We included patients on PD without additional immunosuppression that had received at least 3 SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccine doses. We evaluated anti-spike antibody titers after the initial vaccination, third and fourth doses, using prespecified fixed assessments (i.e., baseline, 28 days, 3, 6, and 12 months after completing the initial vaccine schedule). Breakthrough infections were also collected. Results. We included 164 patients on PD (69% males, 62 ± 13 years old). In patients who had received only two doses, the rates of positive humoral response progressively decreased from 96% at 28 days to 80% at 6 months, as did with anti-spike antibody titers. At 6 months, 102 (62%) patients had received the third vaccine dose. Patients with the third dose had higher rates of positive humoral response (p = 0.01) and higher anti-spike antibody titers (p < 0.001) at 6 months than those with only 2 doses. At 12 months, the whole cohort had received 3 vaccine doses, and 44 (27%) patients had an additional fourth dose. The fourth dose was not associated to higher rates of positive humoral response (100 vs. 97%, p = 0.466) or to statistically significant differences in anti-spike antibody titers as compared to three doses (p = 0.371) at 12 months. Prior antibody titers were the only predictor for subsequent higher anti-spike antibody titer (B 0.53 [95%CI 0.27–0.78], p < 0.001). The 2 (1.2%) patients that developed COVID-19 during follow-up had mild disease. Conclusions. PD presents an acceptable humoral response with three doses of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines that improve the progressive loss of anti-spike antibody titers following two vaccine doses.The present project has been supported by Diaverum, Vifor Pharma, Vircell, Fundación Renal Iñigo Álvarez de Toledo, and ISCIII FEDER funds RICORS2040 (RD21/0005)

    Nitrogen flow analysis in Spain: Perspectives to increase sustainability

    Nitrogen (N) is a macronutrient that, together with P and K, is vital for improving agricultural yields, but its excessive use in crop fertilisation and presence in treated wastewater and sludge are generating emissions both into the atmosphere and into natural water bodies, which leads to eutrophication events. The Haber–Bosch process is energy-intensive and it is the main chemical route to produce reactive nitrogen for the production of fertilisers. Furthermore, there is a strong dependence on imports of reactive nitrogen in Spain and Europe. For these reasons, it is necessary to propose sustainable alternatives that allow solving environmental and supply problems, in addition to proposing efficient management schemes that fit into the circular economy approach. In this context, a nitrogen flow analysis (NFA) was carried out for Spain with the year 2016 as reference. To assess some interactions and flows of N, specific sub-models were also considered for the agriculture and waste management systems. For the food and non-food flow systems, country-specific data were considered. The sectors covered were crop production (CP), animal production (AP), food processing (FP), non-food production (NF) and human consumption (HC). The results reveal a total annual import of 2142 kt N/y, of which 43 % accumulated in stocks of soils and water bodies (913 kt N/y). The largest proportion of losses was associated with emissions from agriculture (724 kt N/y to water bodies and 132 kt N/y accumulated in soils), followed by industry emissions to the atmosphere (122 kt N/y). Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) received around 67 kt N/y, of which 26 % was removed as biosolids and 20 % of these biosolids were recovered to be used for fertilising applications. The 49 kt N/y discharged in the final treated effluent represented 79 % of the total loss of reactive nitrogen to water bodies. In addition, an analysis of N-use efficiency and the actions required for its improvement in Spain, as well as the impact of the current diet on the N cycle, was carried out.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    Hybrid Quantum/Classical simulations of the vibrational relaxation of the Amide I mode of N-methylacetamide in D2O solution

    Hybrid quantum/classical molecular dynamics (MD) is applied to simulate the vibrational relaxation (VR) of the amide I mode of deuterated N-methylacetamide (NMAD) in aqueous (D2O) solution. A novel version of the vibrational molecular dynamics with quantum transitions (MDQT) treatment is developed in which the amide I mode is treated quantum mechanically while the remaining degrees of freedom are treated classically. The instantaneous normal modes of the initially excited NMAD molecule (INM0) are used as internal coordinates since they provide a proper initial partition of the system in quantum and classical subsystems. The evolution in time of the energy stored in each individual normal mode is subsequently quantified using the hybrid quantum-classical instantaneous normal modes (INMt). The identities of both the INM0s and the INMts are tracked using the equilibrium normal modes (ENMs) as templates. The results extracted from the hybrid MDQT simulations show that the quantum treatment of the amide I mode accelerates the whole VR process versus pure classical simulations and gives better agreement with experiments. The relaxation of the amide I mode is found to be essentially an intramolecular vibrational redistribution (IVR) process with little contribution from the solvent, in agreement with previous theoretical and experimental studies. Two well-defined relaxation mechanisms are identified. The faster one accounts for ≈40% of the total vibrational energy that flows through the NMAD molecule and involves the participation of the lowest frequency vibrations as short-life intermediate modes. The second and slower mechanism accounts for the remaining ≈60% of the energy released and is associated to the energy flow through specific mid-range and high-frequency modes.Fil: Bastida, Adolfo.     Tirzepatide and prevention of chronic kidney disease

More specifically, tirzepatide is an agonist of both the glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP1) receptors. In recent clinical trials in persons with obesity or overweight with associated conditions, tirzepatide decreased body weight and other cardiorenal risk factors (blood pressure, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, glycated hemoglobin and albuminuria). Moreover, in a post hoc analysis of the SURPASS-4 randomized clinical trial, tirzepatide decreased albuminuria and total estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) slopes and nearly halved the risk of a pre-specified composite kidney endpoint (eGFR decline ≥40%, renal death, kidney failure or new-onset macroalbuminuria) in participants with T2DM and high cardiovascular risk when compared with insulin glargine. Similar to other kidney-protective drugs, tirzepatide, alone or combined with sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors, caused an early dip in eGFR. Moreover, tirzepatide also decreased eGFR slopes in participants with eGFR >60 mL/min/1.73 m2 or with normoalbuminuria.
